Telangana Govt Tables Bills for Sports and University Amendments
HYDERABAD, DEC 17 :The Congress government has introduced two bills, including the Young India Physical Education and Sports University of Telangana Bill, 2024, and the Telangana Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2024, in the House on Monday.
On behalf of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, the Sports University bill was moved by Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, while another Telangana Universities (Amendment) bill was moved by Health Minister Damodhar Rajnarasimha in the House.
The proposed sports university bill is to provide for the establishment and incorporation of a sports university, namely the Young India Physical Education and Sports University, in the state of Telangana to facilitate and promote education and research in sports studies and allied fields besides functioning as a center of excellence for talented sportspersons and trainees by adopting best international practices.
The headquarters of the university will be in Hyderabad, and it may establish or maintain satellite campuses, sports hostels, and sports schools at such other places in the state.
However, the proposed Universities (Amendment) bill decided to change the name of the ‘Telangana Mahila Vishwavidyalayam (women’s University) to ‘ Veeranari Chakali Ilamma women’s University” and also include this university in the schedule of the Telangana Universities Act, 1991.
Hyderabad as its headquarters, the university may extend to the whole of the state of Telangana.
Chityala Ilamma, popularly known as Chakali Ilamma, is one of the greatest and most inspiring of the Telangana Armed Revolution. Her constructive struggle and idea of the anti-slavery paved the path for justice.
Her biography inspired the Telangana patriots during the separate Telangana movement.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had earlier announced that the Women’s University would be named after Chakali Ilamma, and the government had decided to appoint Ilamma’s granddaughter Shweta as the member of the State Women’s Commission.
During a program organised to observe the death anniversary of Chakali Ilamma here in September last, the CM remembered how she fought against the feudal rulers for land rights of the poor during the Nizam’s rule.
He said with the inspiration of Ilamma, former PM Indira Gandhi introduced land reforms in the country.
After passing both bills in the Houses of the state legislature, they may be submitted to the governor for his assent under Article 200 of the Constitution of India.
